UPDATE: PROP 131 FAILED IN THE REAL ELECTION
54.3% NO
Proposition 131 Explained
Colorado State Proposition 131 would be Establishing All‑Candidate Primary and Ranked Choice Voting General Elections. Proposition 131 proposes amending the Colorado statutes to create a system of voting for certain state and federal offices that allows you to vote for your preferred candidates instead of just one in a tier-based system.
For example, we have 3 candidates. You put number 1 for candidate 3 because you prefer him but put 2 for candidate 1 because you wouldn't mind if he won but put 3 for candidate 2 because you don't want him to win office. In this system, if candidate 3 was the least voted candidate then your vote would be given to candidate 1 instead of being stuck with candidate 3.
What does a "Yes" on Prop 131 mean?
A “yes” vote on Proposition 131 establishes an all-candidate primary for all voters regardless of their political party for certain offices and advances the top four candidates to a general election where voters rank the candidates in order of preference, once certain conditions in state law are met.
Simplified: a "yes” vote would give you more flexibility on who you can vote for so you don't only have to vote for the power players to give smaller candidates the opportunity to win.
What does a "No" on Prop 131 mean?
A “no” vote on Proposition 131 continues the existing primary election system and the current method of selecting candidates and counting votes at general elections.
Simplified: a no-vote would keep the traditional election system like the one in the presidential election where you can only vote for two power players instead of smaller candidates that could be more in line with your views.
