Vote 2024: A Highschooler's Guide - Proposition 127, Predator Hunting

Overview

Proposition 127 is a ballot initiative that names should ban the hunting of mountain lions, bobcats, and lynx across the state. If this proposition passes, hunters will no longer be legally allowed to trap, kill, or harm these wild cats. Except In very specific cases protecting people, livestock, or property. If these species are killed consequences will consist of the individual that is convicted serving up to 365 days in jail, a fine up to $1,000, or both. With this, if the individual obtains a hunting license a 5-year ban will be implemented.

What would your vote mean?

Yes:  a “yes” vote would ban the hunting and trapping of mountain lions, bobcats, and lynx. This means It would be illegal to intentionally kill or capture these animals. Outside of protecting livestock, humans, or property. If breaking this law fines and hunting license bans would be implemented on the individual. Supporters of the proposition believe this will reduce unnecessary harm and cruelty to wildlife and protect their ecosystems.

No: A “no” vote would keep current hunting practices and consequences in place. Hunters would be allowed to continue legally hunting these wildcats under the instated regulated conditions. Opponents of the ban argue that controlled hunting manages wildlife populations and helps prevent overpopulation, which can lead to other environmental problems in the ecosystems these predators reside.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife officials say mountain lions and humans are interacting more than ever along the Front Range. CPW is implementing a plan to stabilize the mountain lion population to keep them and humans safe from each other.
