What Is An Executive Order?

An executive order is something that a president can put in place to make the government run the way that he wants it to run.

Executive Order

Over the years thousands of executive orders have been signed. These are things that can be changed or left in place by each president. These can be used by presidents to do things that can't be done through Congress. These can have power. an example of one is when President Joe Biden signed an order to create a structure for establishing regulations on AI.

These orders don't require congressional approval and can't be directly overturned by lawmakers making them hard to stop. A way Congress can block an order from being fulfilled is by removing funding or creating other obstacles.

These are very common as Roosevelt signed 3,721 executive orders. Even the first president, George Washington, signed 8 executive orders. During Trump's first term, he signed 220 executive orders while Biden signed 160 executive orders as of December 20th.

Executive orders often stand as a political message. examples of this were the extension of the time for TikTok to be sold.

There are limits to what executive orders can do for example in 1992 congress revoked an executive order from President George H.W. Bush to establish a human fetal tissue bank for scientific research. They did this by passing something saying that there would be no legal repercussions. Congress can also pull funding from those agencies.
