Anxiety, stress, and depression plague high schoolers around the world. Dealing with these is an everyday struggle for all of us, finding coping methods to deal with them. At Poudre High School, many students have found an outlet through yoga, a class offered here for over seven years.

Meet the Teacher: Jeanne Morgan

Practicing yoga for over 25 years, she is an expert in her area. Committed to the ideals and teachings of the yoga practice alongside continuing to practice yoga over the years, she states, “It gets you in a relaxing state and calms the mind,” in the stressful world we live in we could all use this skill. Her favorite time to have the class is in the morning as it, “Makes the whole day better” in her words. As she has taught the class over the past 7 years, the class has adapted to fit the needs of the students. Jeanne actually started the class herself through her health class in a stress management unit. The students wondered why they didn’t do this more and thus the yoga class was born.

About the class:

Yoga itself has many different styles and techniques, with this class specializing in Vinyasa and Hatha

Vinyasa: A specialized yoga style that uses the flow of breathing to effortlessly exchange between positions and poses. Generally a faster paced style

Hatha: While generally easy for beginners to pick up, as it is slower taking longer time during each pose. The Sanskrit word Hatha means force, using the style to channel energy.

Yoga I will explore what yoga is about. Diving into all 7 chakras and the 8 limbs of yoga. This is a good introduction to the yoga practice. As one progresses through the close of the class, the final is unique. Students have to create their own routine and practice using all of the poses, positions, and mindfulness learnt throughout the class. This project perfectly encapsulates what the class and yoga as a whole is all about. In the words of Mrs. Morgan, “it’s a part of their day they can be selfish for themselves and take time to decompress!” Yoga II expands on this concept, taking what they learnt in Yoga I with more exploration in some of the different styles of yoga to allow students to choose what fits them best and what they need.

Why should you take this class?

We deal with stress on a daily basis, as a personal testament, this class helped me tremendously, every one of my classes felt easier, and I would credit this class. For all athletes this class is tremendously helpful. The stretching helps your muscles stray away from injury. Allowing your body to stretch and take a break is always not a priority and taken for granted. Yoga can help avoid injuries and allow you to play harder. This class gets glowing reviews and gives you the strength to work through every other class. If you're interested be sure to reach out to your counselor.
