Hello there, welcome to the third edition of “A Review Of” with Miles Croft your host and writer. I am trying to write at least three articles per week. This one is a dystopian novel about a hunt in the virtual utopia OASIS (Short for Ontologically Anthropocentric Sensory Immersive Simulation) for the Heir-less James Halliday’s Egg which will give whoever finds the Egg everything they wanted. Wade Willson is a Gunter short for Egg Hunter, To him OASIS has been the one place where he feels alive and free.
In reality, he lives in a “Stack” campers stacked on top of each other. After the passing of his mother, Wade now lives with his possibly abusive aunt, and he fixes computers to pawn for food tickets. He also gives us a history lesson on how this came to be the fast version, Humans suck at caring for the planet. After heading out of the Stacks, he goes to this abandoned van where he has his OASIS setup. The next chapter is about school life in OASIS and how the engage mode works which has privacy, and Artemis, a Female Gunter who writes journals of her Egg Hunt.
Wade meets up with his friend Aech, a very famous Gunter in Aech’s Basement, a retro-themed area. Then this I-r0k character comes into the picture who is just a total jerk and tries to show up Aech and Wade who just shut down I-r0k immediately. After the bell rings, Wade takes us through the rest of the school day. Wade then explains the many planets and explains how the OASIS is free however to travel you need to pay. In OASIS there are different zones for Robotic technology and Fantasy with magic, there are some zones that allow both along with Pacifits Zones and User vs. User areas
Wade then talks about his avatar’s journey to level up. By hitching rides, his Avatar now has a sword and shield. However, right now he can’t go anywhere so he is stuck on the school planet. After lunch, He heads to His favorite class where they learn about the creators of OASIS most notably Halliday and the weird life he lived. The next few pages are about Hallday and his obsession with old media. And the creation of the OASIS.
Wade now is at his last class so he brushes upon more research with the Almeck, a book containing everything that Halliday loves from old TV shows to old games. He now reflects on the first hint for the first key The Copper Key Awaits Explorers, In A Tomb Filled With Horrors, But You Have Much To Learn, If You Wish To Earn, A Place Among The High Scorers. As Wade thinks of this he realizes an old tabletop game addon with Tomb of Horrors in the name. And the line about Much to Learn is all about high schoolers. He locates the hill where the Copper Key might be. And enters the Tomb Of Horrors. There he finds Acererack, a Lich King who then challenges Wade to a game of “Joust” which is based on an arcade cabinet, where two players fight on flying ostriches trying to make their opponent lose all of their lives. After losing the first game Wade beats The Lich in the second do it all comes down to the final game, After a hard-fought game Wade wins and is presented with the Copper Key.
He then runs into Artimes who has been trying to clear the first key. They make contact and Artemis is very angry about not getting the key and mad at Acererak. After giving her some tips, they trade contact cards. Then the news comes in that Wade got the Copper Key first. He then finds the first gate which is located in a replica of Halliday’s childhood home. Thus he falls into a movie he recognizes “WarGames” he now has to act out the movie testing his knowledge, he eventually succeeds and comes across the second riddle The captain conceals the Jade Key, in a dwelling long neglected, But you can only blow the whistle, once the trophies are all collected. He can relax and take a break from hunting for now.
This is a new format where I go over the first 12 review chapters in a book, recap them in detail and analyze the book’s setup and introduction. This one has a great set up in regards to the introduction of the hunt for The Egg. and how the world mostly forgot about it except for the Gunters until Wade found the first key. Then Wade goes over his backstory and his struggles and life. With the introduction of OASIS and his status in it along with Ach and Art3mis, and school life.
